Thank you for youe help. :)

Opposite to the party members, who don’t have any freedoms and are totally controlled by the inner party, are the proles. The proles, being the working class of Oceania, the cheap or free labor, do get something in return. They are free, they can love, communicate and believe. As we can see by Wiston’s comments about the proles. “(Here Wiston explains how the proles have other freedoms and may have churches and gods if they wanted.)”(Pg. ) This type of freedom in a world controlled by the party seems impossible at first, how can a place where no one is ever alone have such freedoms? A normal response would be to join the proles, to want to be part their society. It wouldn’t matter if you had to work 13 hours a day and have almost no sleep. As long as you could be free, nothing else would matter. But, as we advance in the story, we can see how the proles are not completely free, but instead the party just more secretively controls them. The lottery, which feels the proles with hopes and keeps them working hard, is truly just a lie. “(Here Wiston explain the fraud of the lottery)” (Pg. ) And many spies are also used to keep an eye on the proles “(Wiston talks about the party members among the proles)”(Pg. ) The party uses this technique to stop any kind rebellion from forming. In the end the proles are nothing more than large majorities controlled by the government, to do the job that no one in the party wants to do.

To control the party members of Oceania, and maintain their loyalty to the party, the inner party relies very heavily on government control. One of the most noticeable forms of control, is the communication. Newspeak is a simplified version of English that is used to control the people by limiting their feelings, emotions, and the way to express them. A leading character in the development of the theme of Newspeak and language control, is Syme. When Wiston and Syme, both outer-party members, talk about Newspeak during a break from work. We can see a perfect example of a person brainwashed by the party.

“We’re getting the language into its final shape – the shape it’s going
to have when nobody speaks anything else… We’re destroying words
… Hundreds of them, everyday … Don’t you see that the whole aim
of Newspeak is to narrow the range of though? In the end we shall
make though-crime literally impossible, because there will be no
words in which to express it” (Pg. 54)

This quotation reveals how the people of Oceania, are controlled by Big Brother (BB) to use this new language. Syme, as can be clearly seen, knows too much about Newspeak, he understands how it is used to control. Newspeak was developed to control the emotions and feelings of the people that might oppose the party. But, sometimes this controlling method does not work, or is not very effective. As an example in the case if Wiston, he refuses to accept and adopt Newspeak as a form of communication. Therefore the party created the though-police.

How bad is it?
