I think
instruct is a pretty common phrase if you say you want to instruct the lawyer on how
you would like him to handle the case. Most lawyers know how to handle their cases so this can also work the other way round. They insruct
you on what to expect from a certain case, how to prepare for a hearing, and what to be raedy for in court. You can also say you want to
advise your lawyer on how to approach your case so you have a better chance of getting the upper hand.
