Hello Tdol, I don't want to be pedantic, but I have to correct you when you say that our analysis (there are two of us) shows that the basis of phrasal verbs is in the medieval town.
They are based in the daily life of poeple in the medieval period. Around/about describes street theatre, which obviuosly took place in town or village, around/round is also based in the urban setting (more of that later) and around, with no alternative particle is also based within the precincts of the town.
However, there are many particles that have little or nothing to do with the urban environment. These describe settings that are rural, social events, military environs, and much more.
