a close call is a near miss, it's when you escape something by a skin of your teeth.

ex.

My brither had a close call when his bike nearly collided with a truck.

While driving home, I have noticed a car following me really closely. All of a sudden a dog ran in front of me and I pushed on the breaks as hard as I could. The guy behind me stopped suddenly with a huge squeak from his tires. There was only an inch between our cars. That was a close call!
