I first met this idiom when an English friend described my sense of humour. '(O)f the wall' means strange, unusual (but I think he meant that it was shit).

I've just looked it up in a dictionary as I was curious myself.

It says that it can mean 'slightly crazy, unusal, extremely unconventional'

e.g :Some of his ideas are really off the wall

off-the-wall ideas.

It is an interesting phrase, isn't it?
