Singular or Plural
Question: in the following sentence, should hemisphere be in the singular or the plural?
Iran is in the northern and eastern hemispheres.
Technically, must we think in terms of dividing the earth into quarters, and thus, wouldn't we need hemisphere to be in the plural?

Re: Singular or Plural
Hello, I'm 'The French',
the plural form it's better, I explain why.
The hemisphere is half a sphere and in your sentence you have two, and in conclusion the plural is more logical.
Have a nice day.

But if it is in the north of the eastern hemisphere or in the east of the northern hemisphere, he only has a half of a hemisphere - a semihemisphere, not two hemispheres.

Re: Singular or Plural
Logically, TheFrench is right, but French is more logical than English on such things. We would normally avoid this overlap, however logical, either by using the word twice and hoping no one notices it's inelegant, or by separating the two:
Iran is in the northern hemisphere and the eastern hemisphere.
Iran is in the northern hemisphere, and the eastern.
