Why do you use the comparative form of an adverb in the following sentence?
He read more carefully than the others.
Does it have anything to do with the word "than" in the sentence?

If you want to say that others doesn't read so carefully as he, then you use the comparative.
He read more carefully than the others.
If you use the comparative, you make an comparison. That's why you have to use "than".
