    Post Please Tell me!

I have a difficulty to understand it that in the following sentence why we use "did" instead to add 'ed' in verb "arrive"?

"We were starving so we really DUG IN when the food finally did arrive"

    Plz i am waiting.....

It's usually only to give a certain amount of stress to a phrase. When spoken, you would say the word DID a little louder to emphasise that you had been waiting a long time for it, for instance.

    Example:

We waited an hour for our dinner to arrive, and when it finally DID arrive, it was cold!!!!!

However, there is nothing wrong with saying ".....when it finally arrived, it was cold."

It's not a grammatical rule, it's just a slightly odd use of the word did!

...emphatic do has many uses in English.
    1. To add emphasis to an entire sentence: "He does like spinach. He really does!"
    2. To add emphasis to an imperative: "Do come in." (actually softens the command)
    3. To add emphasis to a frequency adverb: "He never did understand his father." "She always does manage to hurt her mother's feelings."
    4. To contradict a negative statement: "You didn't do your homework, did you?" "Oh, but I did finish it."
    5. To ask a clarifying question about a previous negative statement: "Ridwell didn't take the tools." "Then who did take the tools?"
    6. To indicate a strong concession: "Although the Clintons denied any wrong-doing, they did return some of the gifts."
