They're both incorrect. The correct sentence here is "Find the missing word".
find out - This means "get information". I have to find out where the missing word is.
find - This means locate. I have to find (locate) the missing word.
Find the missing word. - Locate the missing word.
Find out which word is missing. - Identify the missing word.

I'd say it can be, but this is colloquial and should, therefore, only be used in a colloquial context.

Kirk and the the crew of the Enterprise discovered a new solar system. - In this sentence "discover" does not mean "find out". Kirk and his crew didn't find anything out. They stumbled upon something (discovered something), quite by accident perhaps.
