I agree. I learned French from Bernard Pivot, watching Apostrophes and Bouillon de culture. It works.

Watching TV programs is a great way to improve listening comprehension. I think watching DVDs in English is a good exercise too. Watch the videos with the English subtitles on. Pause the screen when you don't understand what is being said. You can then read the dialogue and rewind to hear it again if you like. I wouldn't recommend stopping the movie for every line, but once in a while it is very satisfying to be able to slow the English speakers down and figure out each word that is pronounced. I did the same when I was learning Spanish.
