expose one's buttocks to someone
verb: expose one's buttocks to (Example: "Moon the audience")
What does this guesture mean?
In north America, If someone takes off his pants and showed his buttocks/rear end/ behind to someone else, what does that mean?
Is this action also popular in Europe?

The gesture is shocking. Its function is to shock people.

He wants to shock that person.

I believe it originated in North America, but I could be wrong.

To moon someone is to insult someone...it could be both shocking and insult. A notch down from giving somebody the finger.

We do it here in the UK too. Our friendly anarchists once celebrated the late queen mother's birthday by holding a mass moon in front of her palace. I wonder what she thought the world was coming to as hundreds of rentamob characters gathered to show her what they thought of her.

I wonder what she thought
Oh yeah?
I can tell you...she was not amused
On the other hand, the queen, being just another human being, knows that once you've seen one, you've seen them all.

I'm not sure that seeing one and seeing several hundred lined up for your ninetieth birthday is exactly the same, but then no one has ever done this on my birthday. I feel deprived.
