When participals function as nominals, they are adjectives. Gerunds never function as adjectives. They are always subjects or objects. For example,
Jogging is a lot of fun. (gerund) Test: What is a lot of fun?
These are my jogging shoes. (participal) Test: What kind of shoes?
If there are specific sentences you're having trouble with, please post them, and we'll take a look together.
