Default Where is the s?

This is another sentence:
The drums were still beating, persisting and unchanging. Their sound was no longer a separate thing from the living village.
Should not the word sound be in the plural form? I mean there are drums so they will be producing different sounds.

Together, as a collective, or as group, the drums make one sound.
