fruit or fruits???

I would like clarification on the correct use of the word Fruit or Fruits, when would you use the word Fruits or does fruit cover every scenario?

Example: There are a lot of different fruits on the table or could you say There are a lot of different fruit on the table?

I think you can say either, except the second statement should be "There is a lot of different fruit on the table".

'Fruits' is usually reserved for specific (often scientific) discussion of the fruiting bodies of various plants, including but not limited to the edible fruits that we are familiar with, such as apples, oranges and tomatoes.
