I am currently filling in a application form for the 4 week intensive
CELTA course and have came to a standstill with it. The point in the application that im having trouble with is outlined here. the rest of the application has been no problem but i am finding this section really tough. it may be my skills English skills have diminished over the years! do you think i will be suitable for the course if i cannot complete these sections?? PLEASE HELP!
I can generally find the odd one out but cant give an explanation why!
5. Language awareness
(i) Which one is the “odd one out” in each group and why?
e.g. I’m flying to India next Friday.
She’s playing tennis this afternoon.
Right now I’m working really hard at the office.
I’m sorry, I can’t. I’m having an early night tonight.
Answer: The odd one out is “Right now I’m working hard in the office”
Why: all the others are present continuous for future arrangements whereas the odd one is present continuous for an action at the moment of speaking.

The team’s defeat

The only one that will accept is as a contracted form.
Many people were killed in the earthquake in China.
The tourist was hit by a motorbike.
The cars smashed into each other.
My new telephone was stolen from the locker.

The other three are reported speech.
That could have been terrible!
I think I could have something to eat now.
She could have passed the exam.
They could have got in through the window.
Answer:
Why:
The rest are actions that pertain to the past and cannot be changed but the highlighted one pertains to 'now'. (read up on conditionals)
The rest of the application has been rather enjoyable and has made me more aware of the implications of what i am in store for but this bit has stumped me!
Any help would be greatly appreciated
