The sentence is:

I wish to understand the overall class’ attitudes towards reading.

I'm sure it has to be with an apostrophe, but it just looks strange! Any confirmation woul dbe appreciated.

I'm not a hundred percent sure about what I' m writing, but this is the way I see it:
It is an apostrophe. But since it's pointless writing <class' s> ,you should pronounce it but not write it. e.g. This was Chris' idea.

I agree that "class' attitudes" looks right (ie with an apostrophe) but searching on the internet for this term everyone misses out the apostrophe.

I wouldn't write it that way, I would write: "I want to understand the overall attitude of the class towards reading".

I'm actually using different variants of "attitudes of the class" in different parts of a long thesis. For purposes of variation it would be good to sometimes use "class' attitudes" hance my query about the apostrophe. Would you agree on the use of the apostrophe?

I am in favour of using the possessive apostrophe sparingly; I only use it when it would create ambiguity if I didn't. In short, I wouldn't use it in your example sentence.
