Before he could read, he had no ready distraction when he was home alone for several hours

each day after school. Every day he would kneel on the sofa and gaze over the back of it, out the window. After a while the flow of thoughts would cease. He would be conscious without thinking.

--- I'm not sure I understand the 1st sentence. Does anyone understand what is says?

he had no ready distraction - he couldn't find anything to do with himself.
- he was bored by having no source of amusement.

This all changed when he learnt how to read.
