    I can't say that I've ever heard such an example, Tinker but I suppose it could mean,

    I was taking deep breaths but my breaths felt thin, like a climber at altitude.


    like a climber at altitude = like a mountain climber high on a mountain.

    I've heard of a weak breath but never a thin breath.

    My breath felt thin throughout Russell’s little speech, but I couldn’t tell if it was from relief or aching disappointment.
