I'd like to know the difference between (1) and (2).
1. I hate for that to happen to you.
2. I would hate for that to happen to you.

Teacher Re: would hate I would say that the first isn't correct. Also, I would just say 'I would hate that to happen to you'. The use of 'for that' is regional in American English, I think, and not used in British English much.
