In 458 BC, the Romans were fighting the Aequians and the Sabines. The consul Minucius Esquilinus had led an army to fight the Sabines and Aequians. However, Minucius's army had been trapped by the Aequians in the Alban Hills, and was attempting to fight off a siege.

What does the phrase with bold mean????????
Thus "was attempting to fight off a siege."

Does it mean that, they try to fight bach as hard as they can?

If an army lays siege to a city, the soldiers surround the city and allow nothing in or out, thus hoping the defenders will surrender before they starve to death. If the defenders do nothing, they will eventually starve, so they have to try to break out and attempt to fight off the siege.

A siege is more than that - it's a surrounding with the express intention of starving your trapped enemy into submission. Think of the seige of Troy, which was only ended when the Greeks got into the city in the wooden horse of Troy.
