not
Does the meaning of not in negative questions affected by its position. for example, if we say:
-Did she not realize that she had broken the window?
-
realize that she had broken the window?

realize that she had broken the window?
"Did she not realize that she had broken the window" is exactly the same as
"Didn't she realize that she had broken the window?"
(The uncontracted "Did not she realize . . ." is not said. It is always rendered as "Did she not" rather than "Did not she")
"Not," like many other words, affects the word it is nearest to. But in this case, "not" is near "did realize" in both cases, so the meaning is unchanged by the slight shift it the location of "not."
On the other hand, these sentences have different meanings due to the big relocation of "not"
> "Did she realize that she had not broken the window?"
> "Did she realize that she had broken not the window (but the flowerpot)?"
