be/get in over your head
Hello.
Here's a dialog.
Mary: How do you like physics?
Bob: (_________________.)
What can Bob possibly say if he's very poor at physics?
1. I throw up my hands.
2. I'm in over my head.
3. Physics is over my head.
4. I'm out of my depth at physics.
I think that #1, #3 and #4 fit here, but I wonder if #2 does. It's simply that he's being asked how he likes physics. He's not being asked if he's in a good or bad situation.
Definition of head, Macmillan Online Dictionary: Free American English Dictionary and Thesaurus
< be/get in over your head >
to be or become involved in a situation in which you do not have the necessary skills, knowledge, or money to succeed
-- Inexperienced investors may indeed have been in over their heads.
Thank you.

Two and three are typical expressions. Bob could say one of those.
Mary: How do you like physics?
Bob: (_________________.)

Re: be/get in over your head
It's just that Mary is asking Bob how he likes physics. No one knows if he's in a bad situation. I think that Bob can say "I'm in over my head" with "when it comes to physics."
- When it comes to physics, I'm in over my head.

Yes, that makes sense. It's logical, considering it's understood that this is a challenging study.
