Sequence of tenses
Dear teachers,
Would you be kind enough to share with me your opinion concerning the feasibility of the following sentences?
George said that he was lodging in the house of Mrs.Gippings.
George said that he had lodged in the house of Mrs.Gippings.
She said he drank cold water.
She said he had drunk some cold water.
He said that he had breakfast at 8 o’clock.
He said that he had had breakfast at 8 o’clock.
They said that they posted all letters by air mail.
They said that they had posted all the letters by air mail.
He thought that his watch showed the right time.
I was sure that he was shaving in the bathroom.
I didn’t know what had happened to him.
He said that he had forgotten to wind his watch.
I was afraid I should wake my little sister.
He said he would be back in ten minutes.
He said he would come on Saturday if he ha time.
The teacher told his pupils that water freezes at 0 degrees centigrade.
If he had time, he would help me.
I knew that if he had time, he would help me.
You must come here in time.
He said you must come here in time.
He couldn’t understand what time it was.
George said that the same kind of thing had happened to him eighteen months ago.
Thank you for your efforts.
Regards,
V.

Re: Sequence of tenses
Dear vil:
The sentences sound feasible to my ear.
The only thing that caught my attention was the use of 'in time.'
You must come here in time.
He said you must come here in time.
In AmE, 'in time' is usually followed by more information:
You must come here in time to catch the bus.
Generally, Americans would say, You must come here on time.
I hope this is helpful,
Petra

Re: Sequence of tenses
I would guess people also use "on time" in this case in England. At least, "in time" is defined as eventually in OALD.

Yes, "in time" means "at some point."
