Are these verbs linking verbs in these sentences: 1) The cup arrived broken. 2) The man wriggled loose. 3) The man squirmed free. 4) The people left angry. 5) The prediction came true. or 6) The prediction became true. Last edited by notmyname216; 03-Mar-2005 at 02:39. Reason: additional examples needed to be added.

To the best of my knowledge, any sentence that sets a predicate adjective (or appositive noun) as a subject complement must contain a linking verb. In your latest list, they all appear to be resultant linking verbs, where the adjective describes the condition of the subject resulting from the verb action. #1 may indicate a state-- a stative (? - I may have just coined that) linking verb.

So is this a valid list of linking verbs: Be (all forms) act, appear, arrive, become, chance, come, continue, evolve, fall, feel, get,go,grow, hear, keep, left, lie,lo ok, make, plead, prove, remain, resemble, run, savor, seem, show, sit, smell, sound, squirm, stand, stay, taste, turn, wax, wriggle I read that linking verbs are considered to be a "closed" set of words. Is this all of them?

. I don't quite understand how this thread has popped back up again after almost 2 years, but if you are still around, notmyname-- any list containing verbs as disparate as wriggle, savor and plead is not likely to be a closed set. .
