Default Many A Troubling Time

I saw this in the article:
Quote:
Those words have helped me through many a troubling time and formal occasion.
What do these mean?
1. Those words have helped me through many a troubling time and formal occasion. (How come he used 'a' here? How does that compare with the sentence below in meaning?)
2. Those words have helped me through many troubling times and formal occasions.

Thanks.

Doesn't this have the same meaning as the one above?
