I don't think I've ever heard the latter, though I suppose it would be possible to use it in a comparative sense.

I've heard it used in that comparative sense, but I agree that it's far less likely to be used than the simple form.

I would be really greatful if you provide me with an example; a sentence in which it is used in comparative sense, as stated by you

In the short run, the markets will stay as they are now - in free-fall. But in the longer run - say, 18 months - things will look better. (Now I think of it, 'in the longer run' is typically used in contrast with 'in the short run' - and sometimes, also, with 'in the long run': In the long run, I will be rich; but in the longer run I'll be dead.)
