Please tell me the difference between ''another on'' and ''other one'' becuase I can't use them correctly and I'm really confused.

"Another one" means "one more of the same."

"the other one" means "a different one."

WAITRESS: Do you two students want more pie? We have two flavors.
STUDENT A: Yes. I already had one slice of apple pie, and now I would like another one.
STUDENT B: Yes, but I already had a slice of apple, so now I would like to try the other one.

ALL the choices are wrong because they are all run-on sentences (comma splices.)

Using on "silent" is okay
- My phone was on "silent" -- that's why I couldn't take your call.
- My phone was on "silent." That's why I couldn't take your call.
- I couldn't take your call because my phone was on "silent."
- My phone was on "silent;" that's why I couldn't take your call.

Using on silent mode is okay.
- My phone was on silent mode. That's why I couldn't take your call.
- ditto as above

Using set to silent mode is okay, as is set to "silent."
- My phone was set to silent mode; that's why I couldn't take your call.
- My phone was set to "silent" -- that's why I couldn't take your call.
- ditto as above

Using "My phone was silent mode" is not okay.

Example:

2 dozen red roses
ditto white lilies < -- this means "2 dozen is repeated"

You can also use a written symbol ( " ) to mean "ditto"

2 dozen red roses
" white lilies

In this case, I didn't want to re-type all those variant corrections for the comma splice just because I replaced "silent" with silent mode.

So I wanted to indicate: "etc etc same as above"
