To be there's no difference between your first examples- the vowel sound's the same. 'Heard' and 'heard' are the same, but I wouldn't say 'cup' in the same way as 'furnace'- the 'r' makes the sound longer to me.

I agree. I pronounce the u in cup and the u in furnace differently.
