I am writing to ask the meaning of the following sentences.

When the emperor died, Wu, and all the other concubines, according to custom, had their heads shaved and entered a Buddhist convent. Here they were expected to "pass the remainder of their lives."
--What does the "remainder of their lives" mean?

According to a "hostile tradition", she first met the new emperor in a lavatory where hs as paying ceremonial visit to the convent.
--What does the "hostile tradition" mean?

Scuh qualifying words can mean "more than none and less than all."
--What does the "more than none and less than all" mean?

1- Stay there until they died.

2- I presume it means a tradition told by enemies.

3- More than none = more than 0, less than all = under 100%.
