Hello.

Bristol woman spared jail over biker's death | Bristol news
Imposing sentence he told her: "This case involves the tragic loss of life of Mr Pickering and the effect is profound and long lasting.

Would it be better to use sentence here as an uncountable noun?

sentence
[C, U] the punishment given by a court: a jail / prison sentence a light / heavy sentence to be under sentence of death The judge passed sentence (= said what the punishment would be). The prisoner has served (= completed) his sentence and will be released tomorrow.

That sentence is count or noun-count doesn't change the meaning or grammaticality of the example.
