Exclamation It's characterized?

Hi, I'm writting this essay right? So I have to describe some features of a painting, so I wrote this: ""the portrait it's characterized by Dr John's closed eyes and the light behind it ", is it right?

What do you mean when you say 'characterized', and what does 'it refer to?
