a lot - very much

My daughter wrote:
"I like Wednesdays very much" but her teacher crossed it out and wrote "a lot" ...
To be honest, I don't understand that. Is this a BE AE thing?
The Longman Lexicon of Contemporary English says "a lot" is informal
