create the cult

Hi, I'd like to know if the following sentence is correct.

The poets ( I'm using the articles because I'm referring to the poets of the Renaissance, that is of a specific period), in celebrating the ideal lady, wanted to create the cult of their virgin queen, Elizabeth I.

Is it possible to say to create the cult?
Are there better variations? ( I' d like to maintain the word CULT; that is if possible to change only the verb is the combination to create+cult is not acceptable)

Another thing...
Should I maintain the preposition IN (in celebrating) or is it possible to leave it out?

I wouldn't leave out the perposition because it loses the idea that this was how they did it. I think 'create' is OK, but I'd be tempted to use an indirect article there. You could maybe try 'fashion' as an alternative to 'create'.

In your sentence the word cult by itself brings some negative connotation - at least for me it does.

I would change that to:

The poets, in celebrating the ideal lady, wanted to create an ultimate lyrical shrine to the Virgin Queen.

I agree Tdol. Your sentence has got a different structure though and that's why it sounds better - there is no mention that someone created the cult but that the Queen was simply reveered and very charismatic by just being the Queen.

Perhaps it's an OK word but for some reason the first thing that pops into my mind is a bunch of blood drinking lunatics sacrificing animals or themselves to honor their principles.

On a lighter note, the Canadian one dollar coin (also known as a Loonie) has just released an updated version of the Queen's image - 50 years older and...ehm....a little less appealing.
