Here to ingest is a metaphor comparing digestion of food with digesting/understanding new information/ideas especially difficult ones.

I'm not sure understanding need come into it. I'd have said 'take in and process [in some way]' - for example, catalogue, index, buy the necessary retrieval software .... But the thing about metaphors is that different people can interpret them differently.
