Using 'is' or 'are'
'So many people using the same equipment is bound to get a lot of bacteria'
Why we use 'is', not 'are', in the above sentence? 'So many people' isn't plural? Can you give me a similar example of this kind of sentence pattern, please?

"Is" is correct because the sentence is saying that the fact that so many people use the equipment is bound to generate a lot of bacteria.
