The English translation for the Hindi word "thali" is "plate".

I would have expected the spelling 'plait.' But I haven't been able to verify this.

I don't know if it's the same in Tamil Kon, but in Hindi a "thali" is a type of plate (assiette) rather than a plait meaning interwoven thread, hair etc. I have been to a numberof Hindu weddings and the only thing I have seen tying the couple together is a silk scarf knotted around their wrists.

I see, thanks. I was thinking about the textile when I wrote that. I've only been to one Hindu wedding, and I've seen the re-enactment of Gandhi-ji's in the Attenborough film. Is it certain the OP is asking about the assiette? I know only a little Tamil, but unfortunately even less Hindi.
