Default withhold/knitting league/

Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am on the right track by the interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentences?

Withhold, o sovereign prince, your hasty hand from knitting league with him.

withhold = to hold back; to restrain; to keep from action

knitting league = enter into an alliance

Forbid who will, none shall from me withhold longer thy offered good. (Milton)

withhold = to retain; to keep back; not to grant

He withheld information from the police. (see below)

To withhold it the more easily in heart. (see below)

You have to withhold your hand. (see below)

All disagreeable facts were withheld from him. (see below)

They withheld evidence in the last murder case that has made noise in our town.

withhold = to keep; to keep something for to oneself; to maintain; to retain

She withheld her consent. (She doesn’t give her concent)

They withhold their help.

withhold = refuse

One cannot withhold admiration from this work.

Last year the government withheld some of the payment to my firm because of arousing suspicion of corrupt practice.

Could you tell me what withheld him from making the attempt?

what withheld him from = what kept him from

Thank you for your efforts.

Regards,

V.

withhold = refuse Yes, or, as above, 'not to grant'; to keep back

One cannot withhold admiration from this work. This strikes me as a bit unusual. 'One cannot help but admire this work.' 'One cannot withhold one's admiration of this work.'

Last year the government withheld some of the payment to my firm because of arousing suspicion(s) of corrupt practice.

Could you tell me what withheld him from making the attempt?
More common: what kept him from, or, what prevented him from

what withheld him from = what kept him from

Thank you for your efforts.

Regards,

V.
Best wishes,

Petra
