    There was an ad for English lessons.

    Does this mean that a teacher had advertised for his lessons or that a student wanted lessons?

    I agree, although, if I had to guess, I'd go for the teacher.

    It was somebody claiming to be a teacher. There were eight ads, which is at least seven too many.

    (I deleted one of them myself.)
