[Grammar] A reduction in power consumption or in the power consumption?

I wonder if "the" is required before "power," i.e., "...in the power consumption," in the following sentence.


"This machine incorporates energy-saving parts that ensure a great reduction in power consumption."


The energy-saving parts reduces the power consumption of this machine. When I think of this, I feel that "the" is required but I am not confident.


I would like to have native speakers' opinions.

"the" is not needed in that sentence; it adds nothing to the clarity of the sentence.

Each of these sentences uses the definite article the correctly. It's not necessary in the first sentence because you have used the indefinite article a to refer to something for the first time (a great reduction). In the second sentence, you do need to change the verb to reduce to agree with the subject parts, but otherwise it's 100% correct. The is required in this sentence, because you are referring to a specific thing.
