    What do these mean?
    1. The one thing she didn't get me was this. (Past? At the time it was that?)
    2. The one thing she didn't get me is this. (It is still this?)

    'Was' is more likely, IMO, but you could use 'is'. I'd use the present if, say, I were in a shop and might buy the thing.
