It was summer of the 2008, when Linda got her working permit status in Canada. Two month after obtained her work permit, she got her dream job working as a bookkeeper to a downtown law firm in Vancouver. She loved her job very much. She also, earned good pay and had fantastic co-workers. However, everything changed when she was laid off after her trip from her home country in the Philippines.
Linda has been in Canada for ten years. All these years, she is never been back home. After being at work for one year, she was qualified to take three weeks holiday with pay. She went to the Philippines to visit her parents and relatives. Shortly before her trip, her hours were cut, from eight hours to six hours a day. The country economy dropped down dramatically; as a result, several businesses had to lay off their employees. Linda was one of the employers among thousands who got laid off. She was so existed about going home after long time, but on the other hand, she was worried about her job. Moreover, Linda came back on May 12, 2009. She called her boss to let him know if she was back, and she wanted to know if things picked up. She was told the situation still the same. She applied for employment insurance, but the down turn about employment insurance took six weeks before qualified. Linda was desperate in need with money. She could barely survive for two weeks. She spent all of her savings helping relatives at home. Therefore, all of her bills were past due and most vividly of all, she had house rent for the coming month only but not the following month. She was baffled and stressed. For example, the article “Losing job was traumatic at first, but it has provided time to recharge” by Carol Harder explores how she felt terrible on February 4 a day after being laid off. In comparison to Linda situation, she felt the same but on her case she didn’t have any plan of what to do next at that moment.
In addition, it was hard to look for a job during the recession time. However, Linda tried her best to search for a job. She was looking for a job in different places such as
Employment Paper, Vancouver Sun, and Craigslist website. It was extreme hard for her to obtained employment during the bad time of the economy. She had to compete with thousand of unemployment people for the same advertised position. She sent hundreds of resumes to different places but no one called her for the interview. Linda was depressed. She could afford to pay for her rent anymore. Besides, the employment insurance money she was receiving, it wasn’t enough to cover her living expenses. Because of that, her sister Janet offered her to move in with her. Linda had no choice but moving in with her sister until she obtained employment.
All in all, Linda had to come up with a second plan of what she was going to do. She booked an appointment with a career counsellor to discuss her current situation. She was happy to hear that, she can go back to school and attained training after complete the course. The government will pay her tuition fee and living expenses while she was attending school. Two months later, Linda started an accounting program course with the hope of getting better job after complete her studies.
