What's understood as an equity theatre in Drama milieu?

May it be referring to a kind of theater company made up of a cooperative of actors?

Equity is the union in the US that performers belong to.

An Equity theater will employee only performers who are members of the union (and the pay will probably be better).

The sentence where found: "Gloucester Stage Company is a professional equity theater known for introducing new plays."

Equity is not written with a capital E.

Is this the Gloucester that is in the US? If so, I would suggest their lower-case e is an error, and believe they mean that it follows the union guidelines in terms of pay, working hours, etc.

You can do a quick Google search to see that the phrase "an equity theater" is almost always capitalized.
