Default would prefer

  1. I would prefer you to be familiar with it.
  2. I would prefer you were familiar with it.
Is the second one correct?
  1. I would prefer you to help him.
  2. I would prefer you help him.
  3. I would prefer you helped him.
The third one sounds odd. Is it grammatically correct? I've googled it and I received only 2 search results.
Thanks.

In fact all three constructions may be encountered: #3 is arguably the least common and tends to be restricted to BrE. AmE spakers will tend to prefer #2.

I don't think "I would prefer you were familiar with it" sounds very natural.

I would say this:
"I would prefer that you were familiar with it"
