Exclamation problem with "rise" and "arise"

Which one is correct?

1. After the sun arose, we put the light out.
2. After the sun rose, we put the light out.

And, could you please explain why it is correct?

Thanks(:!

The simple rule here is that something can arise that stands - aside from something arising in conversation and alike (which means to appear). i.e. "Arise Sir Wogan" (get to your feet).

Something can rise freely or to a standing position (or conceptually - "rise to the challenge" / "the figures rose this quarter"). This word is more versitile.
