Re: how do you pronounce : "japan" and "paracetamol" ?
I pronounce them this way:
Japan [dʒə'pæn]
paracetamol [pær'ræ'si'də'mɑl]
___________
Edit: please note that, the symbol ' represents a syllable boundary, not an accent mark, that I, a native Canadian speaker of English pronounce the 1st two syllables of the word paracetomal as [pær'ræ], no reduction on the second vowel, and that in (North American) English inter-medial <t> is voiced to [d] between vowels.

These are correct; the previous person's medicine pronunciation was not correct (you don't stress all the syllables, etc.)

simple question:
Why did they decide to pronounce a 't' like a 'd' or an 'r'?
classic example:
little - (l
t
l)

It's not that the /d/ is a perfect representation of what is said, but in AmE we voice medial /t/ sounds, and /d/ is a fair approximation.

It is a chemical name that is used colloquially as well as medically, with a less formal pronunciation changing /t/ to /d/, etc. The question doesn't specify, and there's nothing in the two words that suggests that a colloquial is to be avoided here.

Certainly you're right about that. As a Torontonian, it doesn't even rate as noticeable to me that the /t/ is changed to /d/ there; I was even supporting that it can be, if you look at it again from my point of view.
I meant that one person's response put tonic accent markers (') on all syllables, rather than just one; the other problem is that no one pronounces the Greek prefix para as [pæræ] with both the first and second vowels equally open.
So it was a misleading transcription to follow, if indeed anyone read it without reading the later amendments.
