Not a teacher. 'I was told...' is a passive sentence and 'They told me...' is a active sentence. If you want to change 'They told me...' into passive sentence, write 'I was told...'. But if you want to change 'I was told...(by sb)' into active sentence, 'They told me...' is just the answer when somebody=them.

In that case, I don't think you agree at all.

The only difference is that one is active and one is passive.


With "they told me" your reader/listener must know who "they" are, while in the passive, it's not important who told you; it's only important that you were told.
