Somebody told me if I really want to improve my listening I better write down what I have just heard, like there is a program called VOA, anybody hear it before? But just wondering is it really work coz I found it took a long time for me to hear, and then write, and then check! So what I'm doing now is just keep listening to radio, watch films, TV programs without writing anything down. Just wondering which method is better, like I have to listen each program seriously and record the content or the method I just doing now?

I think by VOA you mean Voice of America. I don't know if their broadcasts reach Hong Kong, but they do have a website, and you can find out there, I am sure. I don't think you have to write down what you hear, but if there is something in particular you want to remember it would certainly be helpful to you if you write it down. You can get more information about the VOA here: www.voa.gov If you have any questions for them you can email them at: EMAIL REMOVED - Send PM to This User Instead You can get information such as the frequencies at which they broadcast at the website. (VOA broadcasts in 55 languages, including Mandarin and Cantonese.) :)

If you have the option to turn on subtitles as well, you can listen and read at the same time and that makes your listening more active. In the UK, many programs have subtitles for the deaf, so you can turn them on and watch. it's also a good idea to have the radio on in the background, even if you're not really listening, just to hear and absorb the rhythms. a lot of spoken language is to do with rhythm.
