    Dear friends...

    A lot of air entered the room.
    A lot of air had entered the room.

    Does the second sentence imply that air did enter the room, or is it a conditional, like

    A lot of air would have entered the room.

    No, it's the past perfect tense. It's strange that you have not come across this by now.
    Both sentences state explicitly that air entered the room.
