    Default Movie 《clueless》

    Movie speech from 《clueless》:
Mr. Hall: Should all oppressed people be allowed refuge in America? Amber will take the con position. Cher will be pro. Cher: 2 minutes.

Cher: So, OK, like right now, for example, the Haitians need to come to
America. But some people are all "What about the strain on our resources?"
But it's like when I had this garden party for my father's birthday, right? I said R.S.V.P. because it was a sit-down dinner. But people came that, like, did not R.S.V.P. So I was, like, totally buggin'. I had to haul ass to the kitchen, redistribute the food, squish in extra place settings; but by the end of the day it was, like, the more the merrier!
And so, if the government could just get to the kitchen, rearrange some things, we could certainly party with the Haitians.
And in conclusion, may I please remind you that it does not say R.S.V.P. on the Statue of Liberty?

    my questions are:
1,be allowed refugee or be allowed to refugee?
2,what does r.s.v.p stands for?what does it mean?
3,"So I was, like, totally buggin'"or " So I was, like, totally bugged"?cus I checked that "bug" means "to annoy someone".
4,"squish in extra place settings",what does it mean?

    thanks!

    Hi,
    1. Refuge - see this: refuge - Definition from the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary. Should they be given shelter.

    2. This is actually from the French language and it means to respond to an invitation, letting the host/ess know whether you will or will not be attending. In her story, people did not bother calling to say they were coming to the party, but they showed up anyway.

    3. This is not a standard expression, but she was experiencing a lot of stress because of these guests that she was not expecting, and she therefore had not set up places for them to sit or ordered food for them.

    4. Think of your own family table. You are sitting around the table. Suddenly, four guests show up at dinner time. Where do you put them? You all get a lot closer together so they can "squish" (fit in tightly).

I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
