Default spot mark or stain?

Gorge has a big coffee____on the front of his jacket.
A.spot B mark C stain D patch

The right answer is B.

But I can't understand.Please tell me the differences between spot/mark/stain?And why I can not use 'spot' here.

"stain" is used in North American English. Coffee leaves a stain.

You can use it. Though its not a propper as "Mark".
